A useful fit for

People who want visible water and straightforward boiling for a teapot or everyday hot-water tasks.

The main tradeoff

It offers neither selectable lower temperatures nor active warming; a glass jug also needs careful handling and regular scale cleaning.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Do I need temperature buttons just to fill a teapot?

No. This kettle is designed for a straightforward boil cycle, with up to 1.7 liters and visible water level marks.

Can it hold water ready while I finish another task?

It switches off after boiling and has no documented active warming mode. Choose a keep-warm kettle if that is essential.

Will it stop at a selected 80°C for green tea?

No. It has an on/off boiling switch, not selectable lower-temperature control.

For boiling water, with less to set

The Breville Crystal Clear BKE595XL is a straightforward glass kettle: fill it within its marks, close the lid, switch it on and let it turn off after boiling. Its 1.7-liter maximum is useful for a teapot or a larger round of drinks. The main reason to choose it is that simple routine with a visible water level. The main reason to choose something else is equally clear: it has no selectable lower-temperature settings or active keep-warm cycle.

A simple switch can be the right feature

If your household normally needs boiling water and prepares drinks in separate cups or a teapot, extra temperature menus may add little value. The Crystal Clear's illuminated on/off switch makes the action easy to understand. Auto shutoff finishes the normal boil cycle. That does not mean the kettle selects an exact 100°C setpoint for every location; boiling behavior still depends on altitude.

For a recipe that requires water below boiling, however, this model does not supply the relevant control. You could let water cool in ordinary use, but the kettle does not document stopping at a requested 80°C or showing you a live numerical reading. Choose a selectable-temperature model if repeatable lower-temperature preparation is your main goal. A boil-only kettle should not appear to satisfy that requirement merely because all kettles pass through lower temperatures while heating.

See the batch, not just a narrow window

The US-linked instruction book identifies a German SCHOTT glass jug and a 1.7-liter maximum. The transparent body lets you inspect the fill level directly and see when mineral deposits develop. Breville's current US page lists the appliance at 6.1 inches wide, 8.4 inches deep and 10.3 inches high. Those measurements describe the appliance, not the extra room needed for opening its hinged lid and allowing steam to escape.

The lid release opens the top gently rather than removing it from the jug. That can be convenient for quick filling, but it is not a removable-lid design for someone who specifically wants the entire top clear. Keep the lid locked during heating and follow the manual's clearance guidance around heat-sensitive surfaces. Hot glass is still hot even though you can see through it; lift and pour using the handle.

Maximum capacity does not establish a small-fill promise

The manual requires filling between MIN and MAX, and warns that too little water can cause early shutoff while overfilling can produce splashing. It does not supply a numerical minimum in the reviewed English operating text. If your daily task is one small cup, inspect the actual minimum mark instead of assuming that a large glass kettle permits an arbitrarily small amount.

Once water has boiled, the appliance switches off rather than actively holding it ready. There is no hour-long or 20-minute warming feature to combine with the large capacity. A household that regularly comes back for another cup may prefer the IQ Kettle Pure or another documented holding design. The Crystal Clear instead favors completing a batch and serving it when ready.

The scale filter needs a separate routine

The removable filter catches scale particles near the spout. Breville says to keep it fitted during normal operation and gives a procedure for sliding it out, rinsing it and replacing it. It is not an infuser for tea leaves. The kettle is intended for drinking-quality water, with tea, coffee and other drinks prepared outside the jug.

Regular descaling remains important. A glass body makes deposits visible, while the concealed stainless heating area can also discolor from minerals. Follow the supplied care instructions, cool and unplug the kettle before cleaning, and do not immerse the jug, base or cord. The manual also says not to remove the diffuser ring inside the base. A BPA-free claim for water-contact parts should not be expanded into a claim that every component is glass or metal.

The buying decision

The manufacturer's US-linked BKE595XL book and current US page both specify an 1800 W heater, while the manual calls for a 110/120 V outlet. Use the actual appliance label and suitable power rather than borrowing specifications from an overseas version. Choose this model for a visible larger batch and simple boiling. Choose another kettle when a particular lower temperature, a numerical display, an included infuser or active warming is central to the job. That distinction keeps the purchase focused on your routine rather than the number of controls.
