Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can the earlier G13 kettle heat half a liter rather than a full jug?
Yes. The scanned G13 instructions specify 500 mL minimum and 1800 mL maximum for this configuration.
Explore this need in the finder →Is this the version with a 185°F button?
Yes. The documented G13 control set includes 185°F; do not assume current family-page wording identifies the same panel.
Explore this need in the finder →Will it keep water ready for half an hour?
Its documented warming period is 20 minutes, so a 30-minute requirement should lead you to another kettle.

The Breville BKE820XL/C covered by the G13 instruction book is an earlier documented IQ Kettle with a 1.8-liter jug, dual water windows and five fixed temperature buttons. It is useful to understand if you already own one or are comparing an offer that matches those markings. The capacity and control set in this manual differ from Breville's current generic 7-cup IQ Kettle description. Check the actual appliance and its supplied instructions rather than assuming that a familiar family name proves identical specifications.
The useful difference is in the buttons
The G13 panel provides 175°F, 185°F, 195°F, 200°F and 212°F. That includes a 185°F choice which is absent from the documented BKE830XL Pure and BKE845 Luxe control sets. Conversely, those later references include 205°F, which this G13 panel does not. If you have a favorite preparation that uses one of those settings, the difference matters more than simply counting five buttons on both kettles.
These are physical Fahrenheit selections, not a continuous temperature dial. There is no live numerical water-temperature display in the documented controls. Breville also warns that this household product is not calibrated for commercial or scientific use. Use its presets as repeatable preparation choices, while following your tea or coffee supplier's directions and avoiding claims of laboratory accuracy.
A documented minimum helps small-batch decisions
Unlike kettle instructions that merely refer to a MIN mark, this manual states a 500 mL minimum and 1800 mL maximum. That is a practical advantage for understanding whether the earlier version suits you. It accommodates a half-liter batch but does not justify heating only a small 150 mL cup. Always obey the marks on the actual unit, particularly if the offered kettle turns out to be a different BKE820 edition.
The general spout and substantial jug favor serving a teapot, French press or several drinks. A gooseneck would be the more specialized choice for controlling the distribution of a narrow stream over coffee grounds. A water window on each side helps you inspect the fill level without opening the top, while the hinged soft-opening lid still needs clearance above the appliance for filling and steam.
What happens after heating
Keep Warm can be enabled before, during or shortly after the heating cycle. For a lower-temperature button, it maintains that selected temperature for 20 minutes. Choosing 212°F changes the subsequent warming behavior: Breville specifies approximately 200°F for that 20-minute reserve. This supports a boil-then-warm routine, not a promise to keep water at a continuous rolling boil.
Lifting the kettle from the base cancels warming. If you pour at the table and bring it back later, the earlier manual does not describe automatic continuation of that cycle. Decide whether selecting it again is acceptable in your household. A short warming option may be enough for breakfast, but it should not be stretched into an hour-long feature merely because the kettle can be restarted.
Maintenance and electrical fit
The G13 book identifies a 1500 W concealed heater and 110/120 V operation in its US/Canada context. That configuration should not be confused with overseas IQ Kettles that share a broad product name. Keep the original power base paired with the kettle, use appropriate grounded power and follow the actual electrical label. A lift-off jug remains dependent on its powered base for heating.
The removable mesh scale filter can be lifted out behind the spout, rinsed and replaced. It is not a tea basket. Breville permits drinking-quality water and specifically excludes tea, coffee, other liquids and food inside the kettle. After cooling and unplugging, wipe the exterior, keep electrical components dry and descale regularly. Mineral deposits can collect inside and around the water windows even though the outside is stainless steel.
How to compare it fairly
This earlier configuration is worth comparing when its known 500 mL minimum, 1.8-liter maximum and 185°F button address your needs. It should not silently inherit current product-page dimensions, different presets or a newer capacity statement. For a new purchase, check the exact control panel and rating label against the seller's package details. If that identity does not match G13, compare the supplied edition separately. The goal is a kettle that fits your actual routine, not a specification assembled from several generations.
