A useful fit for

Shoppers who want to see the water in a larger glass jug and use simple tea or French press presets.

The main tradeoff

The lowest preset is 175°F; there is no live numerical readout or arbitrary target control, and lifting the jug cancels warming.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is this a glass kettle for a larger tea round?

Yes. The US BKE830XL instructions specify 1.7 liters in a glass jug, with a general serving spout and visible water marks.

Can I leave it warming while I carry the jug to the table?

It offers 20 minutes of warming on its base, but removing the jug cancels that function. It is not a carry-away warming vessel.

Does the green-tea setting mean exact 80°C?

The actual button selects 175°F, approximately 79.4°C. An exact 80°C request needs a different documented control.

A transparent alternative to a metal preset kettle

The Breville IQ Kettle Pure BKE830XL is for someone who wants the familiar operation of a preset tea kettle in a glass jug. Its 1.7-liter maximum is useful for a teapot or several drinks, and the general spout favors ordinary serving. The attraction is seeing the water and using a small number of clearly defined heating choices. Choose a different design if your routine depends on a narrow gooseneck stream, a changing numerical readout or temperatures outside these fixed buttons.

Five settings do not mean unlimited adjustment

The US BKE830XL instructions list 175°F, 195°F, 200°F, 205°F and 212°F. That exact set is more useful for choosing a kettle than the broad marketing phrase “five varietal settings.” The lowest setting is already 175°F, so this is not a low-temperature warming kettle for every conceivable drink. For a tea with its own preparation directions, compare those directions with the numerical button rather than relying solely on a tea-category name.

The kettle does not offer a dial for intermediate settings or a numerical display of the water as it heats. Its illuminated controls identify the program. A Fahrenheit button also should not be converted into an imaginary exact Celsius setting: 175°F is approximately 79.4°C, rather than exactly 80°C. The instruction book itself distinguishes this household appliance from calibrated commercial or scientific equipment, so a named target is not a claim of laboratory measurement accuracy.

Understand what the 20-minute hold really does

Keep Warm is an optional function that can be selected before heating, during the cycle or within one minute of completion. With a non-boiling button selected, it cycles the heater to maintain that setting for 20 minutes. When the 212°F Boil button is used, the subsequent hold is approximately 200°F. A request for boiled water followed by a warm reserve is therefore different from a request to hold an exact boiling setpoint.

Removing the jug from the base during Keep Warm switches that function off. This matters if you want to pour at a table and return later: the kettle is not documented to pick up its warming cycle automatically. Someone who mainly pours a cup next to the base may not mind reselecting the controls, while a buyer who values uninterrupted warming after serving should compare that behavior explicitly.

Glass visibility and working space

Breville describes the jug as German SCHOTT glass, and the US product page lists a 7.2-inch width, 8.4-inch depth and 10.6-inch height. The glass body gives a direct view of the fill level. The lid opens with a release button and remains attached, so you need room above the kettle to fill it and room for escaping steam. The manual calls for clearance from walls and heat-sensitive materials rather than a tight fit beneath shelving.

The maximum capacity is not the same as the smallest useful batch. This version's reviewed operating text requires filling between the MIN and MAX marks but does not supply a numerical minimum. Use those marks on the actual jug. Do not treat boil-dry protection as approval to heat an arbitrary tiny amount; the manual warns that too little water can cause premature shutoff.

Separate heating, steeping and cleaning

The Pure is a water kettle. Breville expressly says not to put tea, coffee, other liquids or food inside it. Its removable scale filter is a maintenance component behind the spout, not a basket for loose leaves. A teapot or cup infuser remains part of the routine if you brew loose-leaf tea. The manufacturer's BPA-free claim for water-contact parts does not establish that those parts are all metal or that the assembly contains no plastic.

After cooling and unplugging, the filter can be slid out and rinsed, and the exterior wiped without immersing the jug or base. Regular descaling is important, especially where mineral-rich water leaves deposits. Breville also advises emptying the kettle after use rather than leaving water standing overnight. Seeing the inside through glass makes buildup more noticeable; it does not remove the need for that care.

Where it fits on a shortlist

Choose the BKE830XL when a visible 1.7-liter jug and short, straightforward preset routine fit your kitchen. Its 1500 W element and documented 110/120 V US operation are distinct from specifications for overseas kettle editions. If your priority is a longer warming window, compare the 60-minute COSORI CO117-DK; if the steel exterior matters more than seeing the water, consider the Smart Kettle Luxe. The useful comparison is the complete serving routine, including what happens when you lift the jug.
