A useful fit for

People who prefer a metal exterior and physical tea buttons while retaining a visible fill level on either side.

The main tradeoff

Its five temperatures are fixed Fahrenheit settings, and the short warming cycle ends when the jug is lifted.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can I see the fill level without choosing a glass jug?

Yes. The stainless exterior has dual water windows, and the documented maximum is 1.7 liters.

Will a boil remain at 100°C throughout warming?

No. Breville specifies approximately 200°F for the 20-minute warming phase after the 212°F Boil selection.

Is a 20-minute pause between cups within its routine?

Yes, when Keep Warm is selected and the jug stays on the powered base. Lifting it cancels that warming function.

Choose the exterior and handling, not an imaginary app

The Breville Smart Kettle Luxe BKE845 is a 1.7-liter stainless steel kettle for everyday serving with a few temperature choices. Its particular appeal is the combination of a metal exterior, stainless handle, soft-opening lid and water windows on both sides. The word “Smart” describes its preset heating routine here; the reviewed US instructions describe physical controls, not remote phone operation. Buy it because those controls and the serving format suit you, rather than expecting an app-connected coffee station.

The US temperature choices are specific

The electronic panel offers 175°F, 195°F, 200°F, 205°F and 212°F. Press the desired button and Start/Cancel to heat. These are discrete choices rather than a continuously adjustable range, even though the product page uses broad language about creating brewing conditions. If your tea or coffee directions call for one of those values, a dedicated button may be convenient. If you regularly move a recipe a degree or two, the Luxe does not document that kind of adjustment.

The controls illuminate to show a choice; they do not display a live numerical water temperature. The manufacturer's own instructions say the kettle is not calibrated for commercial or scientific use. Think of it as a household preset appliance rather than a thermometer substitute. Likewise, a Fahrenheit setting should not be rounded into an exact Celsius target when comparing recipes.

Keeping water ready has a clear limit

Keep Warm can be selected before heating, during heating or shortly after the cycle completes, and runs for 20 minutes. At the lower presets it maintains the selected temperature. At the 212°F setting, it instead holds the boiled water at approximately 200°F. That gives you a reserve of hot water without a continuous rolling boil, but it is not the same as holding a specified 100°C for the whole period.

The routine also changes when you pour. Breville states that lifting the jug from its base cancels Keep Warm. If you carry it to a dining table, do not assume returning it will automatically resume the remaining time. This is a meaningful difference from kettles with a short memory window. A buyer who only wants one cup may use the normal heating cycle without warming; someone who wants repeated drinks over an hour should choose a longer-hold model.

Metal body, visible water

The dual water windows help you check the level without looking through a full glass jug or opening the lid. Breville lists a 7.1-inch width, 9.6-inch depth and 9.9-inch height. The lid-release button is in the handle area, and the top stays attached while opening. Allow space above and around the kettle for access and steam; the instruction book calls for separation from heat-sensitive walls and materials.

Capacity is 1.7 liters in the USCM instruction book, which also provides the 120 V, 60 Hz, 1500 W rating. The water must remain between the actual minimum and maximum marks. That reviewed book does not quantify the minimum in milliliters, so the model should not be chosen on an unsupported promise that it can heat a single small cup. If minimum volume is a priority, verify the mark on the supplied edition.

What the steel construction does and does not mean

A stainless exterior is a useful aesthetic and handling preference, but it is not proof of an entirely metal water path. The manual's BPA-free footnote specifically refers to testing the food-contact plastic materials. That is a more precise description than calling this a plastic-free kettle. Nor do the metal body and short hold cycle establish double-wall insulation or a universally cool surface. Use the handle and avoid the hot jug.

The removable mesh scale filter slides out for cleaning. It is not an included tea infuser: the kettle is for drinking-quality water, with tea or coffee prepared separately. Cool and unplug it before care, keep electrical components dry and do not immerse the jug or base. Breville says regular descaling is essential, with frequency depending on use and water hardness; a metal exterior does not prevent scale inside.

The practical verdict

The Luxe is a sensible shortlist entry if your needs are a general serving spout, a larger batch, water windows and simple physical presets. Its design differences are easier to justify than an assumption that it offers broader temperature control than every other Breville. Choose the glass IQ Kettle Pure if transparency matters more than the steel exterior, or a genuinely adjustable kettle with a live display if numerical experimentation is central to your brewing. The 20-minute limit and cancellation on lifting are worth deciding before buying.
