Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I see the water temperature while heating a large batch?
Yes. The glass jug holds up to 1.75 liters and the display shows water temperature during heating, in your selected Fahrenheit or Celsius units.
Explore this need in the finder →Does it keep a second round ready without a separate warming button?
Its documented operating sequence automatically holds the selected temperature for 30 minutes after reaching it.
Explore this need in the finder →Can I put loose tea in its small filter?
No. OXO says not to put tea or coffee inside the kettle. The removable stainless filter is for the water path, not an infuser.

The OXO Brew Adjustable Temperature Kettle, model 8716900, combines a 1.75-liter glass jug with a dial rather than a row of tea buttons. Its clearest use is a kitchen where several people share hot water and want to see both the fill level and the temperature as it heats. It is a general-pour design. Choose it for everyday cups, a teapot or a French press; a narrow gooseneck is a more specialized tool for controlling a small pour-over stream.
The dial and display solve different problems
Pressing the OXO button opens temperature selection, turning the dial changes the requested temperature, and another press confirms it. The instruction booklet gives a range from 104°F to 212°F, or 40°C to 100°C. Holding the button for three seconds opens unit selection, so Fahrenheit and Celsius are both supported. The display then shows the water temperature during heating, which is more informative than a light that simply identifies a selected tea program.
There is an important distinction between offering an adjustable range and proving every increment within it. The reviewed instructions do not specify the dial's step size. If a particular recipe depends on an exact intermediate setting, check the controls on the actual edition before buying. The endpoint settings are documented; we do not turn the absence of a step specification into a promise of continuous control.
Nor does a 212°F selection guarantee that water will physically reach that temperature at every elevation. OXO expressly notes that altitude lowers the boiling point and addresses a kettle stopping below the selected value in its troubleshooting section. The control setting and the local behavior of boiling water should be understood separately.
Thirty minutes for the next cup
The warming cycle starts automatically after the kettle reaches the chosen temperature and runs for 30 minutes. This is a practical arrangement if you often return for another cup while making breakfast: selecting the temperature is also the route to keeping that water ready. It is less useful if you need an hour-long waiting period. A longer holding time is a distinct feature to compare rather than assuming that all adjustable kettles stay on indefinitely.
The jug must be positioned on its powered base to heat. OXO specifically warns against returning an empty kettle to an active warming base. Turn the base off first. Lifting the jug free of a cord helps serving, but “cordless” in this context does not mean the kettle heats on a battery away from the kitchen outlet.
Check minimum fill as carefully as maximum capacity
A 1.75-liter capacity is useful when a compact pouring kettle would require repeated refills. The glass body makes the remaining water visible. Filling is through a soft-opening hinged lid, which controls the initial release of steam; it is not a removable top. Leave working room above the appliance and follow OXO's instruction not to operate it under cabinetry.
The booklet requires water between MIN and MAX but does not provide a numerical minimum in the text reviewed here. That means a very small-cup requirement cannot be assumed satisfied merely because the kettle has a large transparent body. Read the mark on the supplied kettle before using it. Under-filling can cause premature shutoff or overheating, while over-filling can send water through the spout or into the base.
Water only, with accessible scale maintenance
The removable stainless steel filter is useful for catching particles and for cleaning a spout that starts pouring slowly. It is not an included tea basket. OXO expressly limits the appliance to drinking-quality water and descaling products, and says not to put tea or coffee inside. Brew in the vessel that follows the kettle, rather than treating this glass jug as a tea maker.
OXO recommends descaling every 60 uses, with water hardness affecting the practical need. The kettle and base are not dishwasher-safe and must not be immersed. A soft cloth, a separately rinsed filter and the maker's descaling procedure are the appropriate maintenance route. The glass and metal areas become hot; the handle and designated touchpoints are the parts intended for handling.
The buying decision
This model earns a place on a shortlist when your priorities are a large glass vessel, a live temperature display, both unit systems and an automatic half-hour hold. The documented US instructions specify a 110/120 V outlet and a 1500 W heater. Choose a different kettle if you need a removable lid, an included infuser, a numerical small-fill guarantee or a longer warming period. Those practical differences matter more than the presence of a dial alone.
