A useful fit for

Households wanting visible water, passive insulation and a simple boiling switch.

The main tradeoff

Colored bands require manual interruption for lower heat; they are not selectable targets or active holding.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does changing color let me select 80°C?

No. The light indicates a broad band and heating must be interrupted manually.

Will its insulation satisfy a 30-minute active hold requirement?

No. The normal cycle switches off after boiling; slower cooling is not an active hold mode.

Can it handle a large boil batch with documented double walls?

Yes, up to 1.7 L, with a documented minimum of 0.5 L.

Choose it for the insulated glass design and visible progress

The Hamilton Beach 40850 is a 1.7-liter boil-only kettle with an unusual visual cue: its internal lights change color as the water becomes hotter. It makes sense for a household that wants ordinary hot-water service with a more informative light than a simple power indicator. Its double-wall construction is another reason to consider it. The essential limitation is that watching colors and switching the kettle off yourself is different from selecting a controlled brewing temperature.

What the five colors actually tell you

The instruction chart associates purple with water below 113°F, blue with 113–144°F, green with 144–169°F, light green with 169–198°F and red with water above 198°F. These are broad bands. They do not let you distinguish, for example, 175°F from 190°F within the same light-green state. Hamilton Beach also warns that actual temperature can vary. Treat the lights as a rough progress indication, not a digital thermometer.

The controls reinforce that distinction. You fill the kettle, close the lid and press the power switch down; it eventually switches itself off after boiling. The product page suggests turning it off when the desired heat is reached. That is a manual intervention, with no documented numerical setpoint or automatic lower-temperature stop. In the finder, a request to choose a temperature below boiling should lead you to a different model.

Insulation is useful without being active Keep Warm

The maker's heat-retention comparison concerns how long a full 1.7-liter batch takes to cool to 150°F compared with model 40865. It is a specific cooling comparison, not a promise that every batch will stay drink-ready for a particular number of minutes. It also does not establish what the temperature will be after your first cup has been poured.

Once the 40850 has boiled and switched off, insulation slows cooling without actively controlling the water temperature. There is no timed Keep Warm program in the documented operating sequence. A buyer who needs water held for 30 minutes should select a kettle with a verified holding mode. Someone who simply wants the remaining water to lose heat less quickly may find this passive arrangement entirely sufficient.

Plan around the half-liter minimum

The manual specifies a 0.5-liter minimum and a 1.7-liter maximum. That is a sensible span for a teapot, several smaller cups or kitchen water tasks. It is less convenient if your normal requirement is a single small 200-milliliter drink and you want to heat only that amount. The protection against boiling dry does not authorize filling below the minimum mark.

The instructions also describe automatic shutoff occurring 30–90 seconds after the water boils. That is manufacturer operating guidance, not a boil-time measurement from our own kitchen. Keep the lid closed and follow the fill marks so the steam-based shutoff can work as intended. The wide general-purpose spout is appropriate for serving cups and pots; it does not provide the narrow flow control of a gooseneck.

A glass kettle still needs regular care

The maker describes glass walls and a stainless steel heating plate. The hinged lid carries a nonremovable mesh scale filter. Brush that filter gently in place after cooling rather than trying to pull it out like a removable cartridge. The glass makes mineral deposits easy to notice, which is helpful if you use the kettle in a hard-water area, but visibility does not remove the need to descale.

Unplug and cool the appliance before cleaning, avoid abrasive pads and keep the powered base out of water. Hamilton Beach supplies both a vinegar standing method and a cream-of-tartar procedure for deposits. Follow the exact instructions rather than importing a cleaning recipe from another kettle. Double-wall construction also does not mean steam, hot water or every external component is harmless to touch.

When the colored lights are enough

Choose the 40850 if you like visible water, a changing-color heating cue and passive heat retention, while expecting to pour soon after a normal boiling cycle. If your real requirement is selecting and holding a numerical tea temperature, compare the Cuisinart CPK-17P1. Its preset-and-hold routine addresses that job directly. The deciding question is whether you want an indication to watch or a temperature program to run for you.
