Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Can I require visible water and a larger batch?
Yes. The marked glass body and 1.7 L maximum suit that requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →Can it hold water for half an hour?
No active warming program is documented.
Explore this need in the finder →Can a 200 mL fill be used normally?
No. The guide gives a 500 mL minimum.

The Hamilton Beach 40864J is a 1.7-liter glass electric kettle aimed at ordinary boiling and serving. It makes sense when a transparent jug and straightforward controls matter more than choosing a temperature on a screen. A teapot, several cups or a cooking-water task are natural uses. The principal limitation is that the blue illumination and substantial capacity come without a selected-temperature or active Keep Warm mode.
A product suffix still deserves an exact identity check
The manufacturer's 40864J page identifies this model directly and links the same operating guide used for several Hamilton Beach glass kettles. That supports its documented normal heating routine. It does not establish that every accessory, production revision or marketplace package carrying a similar 40864 code is interchangeable. Check the full model on the actual listing and appliance when buying replacement parts.
For shopping purposes, the useful capability is uncomplicated: fill within the specified marks, close the lid, place the jug on the base and press the switch. It shuts off after boiling. The official feature list identifies that on/off switch, despite loose marketing wording elsewhere referring to a temperature choice. There is no documented numerical setpoint control in the operating instructions.
Does its fill range fit your day?
The guide states a 0.5-liter minimum and a 1.7-liter maximum. The upper limit easily clears a one-liter or 1.5-liter capacity requirement, while the lower limit matters for a person heating water for only one small drink. A 250-milliliter mug does not mean this kettle is intended to run with 250 milliliters inside. Use the actual minimum rather than assuming protection against boiling dry permits a lower fill.
The clear body allows you to see the water line and remaining quantity from outside. It is useful when refilling for a second person, and also helps show whether water is still above the minimum before restarting. A completely full kettle is not necessary for every cycle. Fill for the task while respecting both ends of the permitted range.
What happens while the blue light is on
The blue light signals that heating is underway. It does not show whether the water is at 70°C, 80°C or another exact value. If a drink needs a specific lower setpoint, a kettle with documented temperature control is a more repeatable choice than watching bubbles or timing a manual switch-off. Likewise, the light does not indicate a post-boil holding program.
The linked guide says automatic shutoff may follow 30–90 seconds after water boils. Allow the normal cycle to finish with the lid properly closed. The 1500-watt specification describes the heater, while any expectation about speed depends on starting water temperature and fill. This assessment includes no measured boil-speed, sound or energy-use test.
Pouring and maintaining a transparent jug
The short, broad spout is intended for general serving. That is convenient when filling cups or a pot without needing the deliberate narrow stream of a gooseneck. The jug detaches from the base for serving, leaving the cable behind. It is cordless in that serving sense, and still heats only while connected to its powered base.
The linked care instructions describe a nonremovable mesh scale filter. Rinse and gently brush it in place after cooling; do not force it out because an older review or another model shows a removable part. The filter catches suspended deposits on the way to the cup, while descaling addresses deposits attached to the kettle floor. These are complementary maintenance jobs.
Cool and unplug the appliance before cleaning, keep electrical connections dry and avoid abrasive tools on the glass and stainless surfaces. The material description does not establish an all-metal water path or a cool-touch exterior. Use the kettle for water and brew leaves or coffee separately. A mesh filter near the spout is not a loose-tea basket.
When a different kettle is more useful
Choose the 40864J for visible filling and a larger, simple boil cycle. Compare the Breville Crystal Clear BKE595XL if another lid and filter arrangement may suit you better. Choose a selectable model if you need water stopped and held at a particular recipe temperature. That decision follows the work the appliance must do, rather than assuming a glass body with lights is a temperature-control feature.
