A useful fit for

Shared households wanting visible water and direct tea or French press buttons.

The main tradeoff

Fixed values rather than a dial; lifting cancels warming and requires restarting.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Will a large batch and 30-minute hold work together?

Yes. Its 1.7 L capacity and supported warming mode cover that combination.

Is 80°C selectable exactly?

No. 175°F is close to 80°C but not exact, and no free adjustment is documented.

Does the water window show a numerical live temperature?

No. It shows water level; button indicators show the chosen program.

Preset heating when you also want to see the water

The Hamilton Beach 40941RG is a useful fit for a household that wants a transparent 1.7-liter kettle with familiar tea buttons and an optional 30-minute warming period. It combines visible filling with more control than a basic glass boil-only kettle. The deciding compromise is that it offers six fixed Fahrenheit settings rather than freely adjustable temperatures, and lifting the jug cancels the warming routine until you restart it.

Six buttons, with a specific white-tea setting

The manual's guide lists 160°F for delicate tea, 175°F for green, 180°F for white, 190°F for oolong or hot cocoa, 200°F for French press and 212°F for black or herbal tea and boiling. These numbers matter more than the category names. A recipe may specify something different, and different brands' similarly named tea buttons need not use the same value.

In particular, the 180°F white-tea setting should not be replaced with 185°F simply because another well-known preset kettle uses that figure. The controls in this model are the basis for matching. There is no documented single-degree adjustment or independent Celsius control. A 175°F green setting is approximately 79.4°C rather than exactly 80°C, so it should not pass an exact 80°C requirement.

Selected-temperature feedback is different from a live readout

Press a temperature button and then Start/Stop. The selected button illuminates and flashes until the temperature is reached, followed by an audible ready signal. This tells you which program is running, but is not a numerical display of the water's changing temperature. A requirement to watch the current temperature therefore needs a different model.

Pressing Start/Stop without choosing a temperature defaults to boiling. That keeps the ordinary hot-water routine accessible to another household member who does not want to choose a tea setting. It also means the kettle can serve a mixed household: some people can use a lower preset while others simply start a boil. The nominal temperature remains a selected control target rather than our own accuracy measurement.

Holding is optional and needs restarting after a pour

Press Keep Warm when you want the selected-temperature warming routine. The manual describes up to 30 minutes, then automatic shutoff. This is useful when your drink preparation is spread across a short interval. Without selecting Keep Warm, the normal purpose is to heat and then serve, rather than assume every cycle includes warming.

When you lift the kettle off the base, Keep Warm stops. To resume it after returning the jug, select the temperature, start heating and select Keep Warm again as instructed. This is a real workflow difference from models that remember a quick lift-and-return automatically. If you often pour repeatedly over a long breakfast, consider whether that repeated button action is acceptable.

Glass visibility and the half-liter minimum

The 1.7-liter maximum is useful for a larger batch. The manual also requires a minimum of 0.5 liter, which matters if you normally make one small drink and want no surplus heated water. A 200-milliliter small-fill requirement is outside the documented normal range. Use the actual fill marks, not protection against boiling dry, to judge that fit.

The glass vessel makes it easy to inspect the level and see mineral deposits. The lid opens with a button and remains attached. Its general-purpose spout suits a mug, teapot or French press rather than a narrow, deliberate gooseneck stream. The jug lifts away from the plugged-in base for serving, while cord storage beneath the base manages excess cable.

Care and an appropriate comparison

The mesh scale filter catches suspended particles, and the manual describes brushing it after the kettle cools. It is not an infuser for loose tea; the instructions place leaves in a separate cup infuser and limit the kettle itself to water. Glass and stainless components should not become an unsupported all-metal water-path claim. Descale the heater area when needed, keep electrical connections dry and avoid abrasive pads.

Choose the 40941RG for visible water, a larger batch and fixed-button heating when its exact values fit your drinks. The Cuisinart CPK-17P1 is a useful comparison for a different preset set and warming behavior. A kettle with a live screen and adjustable control is the more suitable direction if watching current temperature or choosing a value between buttons is essential.
